A Wedding Boom Is Coming - Are You Ready For It?

We’re pulling back the curtain on why the number of wedding engagements will be increasing and how to get ahead of the engagement wave.

Whims & Joy

November - February is known as “Engagement Season.” About 40% of all engagements each year happen during these months.

However, the pandemic triggered a sharp marriage proposal drop off.

Although we’ve still seen a wave of engagements every year post-covid during the traditional engagement season, the number of wedding engagements has overall gone through a steep decline.

Covid had a huge impact on relationships due to the impact of pandemic lifestyles. This impact resulted in fewer couples being ready for a marriage proposal.

But that’s all about to change.

The Impact Of Covid On Wedding Engagements

“On average couples typically get engaged about 3.25 years after they begin dating.” (Kavilanz, 2023). Interestingly, Kavilanz found that relationships and their progression towards engagements is closely tracked by Signet Jewelers, the largest jewelry company in the United States.

Signet owns Zales, Jared, Kay Jewelers, Blue Nile, and Daimond’s Direct - clearly they are experts in engagement rings and weddings - and they found that 2023 is expected to be the bottom out point of a dip in engagements from covid (Kavilanz, 2023).

Over the next three years they confidently expect engagements will increase every year based on the 45 milestones they track that they’ve found relationships move through on the way to a wedding engagement. Signet has found that not every couple will move through all 45 milestones, but if a couple hits 25-30 milestones in their relationship the odds of a wedding proposal gets really high (Kavilanz, 2023). Things like “going to a concert together” or “going to a sporting event together” are all important dating milestones that were halted during covid. With the return to pre-pandemic activities, relationships are progressing and a wave of marriage proposals is ahead.
